” I want to enjoy conversation more! but I can’t speak Japanese well ” ” I don’t know how to ask an order in Japanese at the restaurant …”

So, we would like to introduce simple Japanese here. Part 1 is ” Restaurant”.

In Japan, generally staff in the restaurant are very friendly. Though some can’t speak English well, they will try their best to explain to you in English. But if you can speak Japanese even a little bit, they will be very happy to talk to you and you will be happy to enjoy in the restaurant!

ORDERING

” Kore wo onegai shimasu”

This phrase will be used when you decided to order the food when a waiter comes to your table. You point the food in the menu by your finger and tell this phrase to a waiter.

“Omizu kudasai” = Please give me a glass of water

When you need water, this is the phrase for asking water to the restaurant. If you change the word “omizu” to “ocha”, it means ” please give me a tea” (” Ocha kudasai” )

But ocha (tea) can be provided as free at only sushi restaurant.

” Sumimasen ” = excuse me

When you want waiter to come over your table, use this word to say ” excuse me”. Normally Japanese rise a hand to say this word.

” Kore wa nan desuka?” = what is this

This means ” what is this?”. Of course, a waiter may explain by Japanese when he/she needs to answer to you. But they may probably try their best to answer for you.

“~ wo onegaishimasu” =please give me ~

For example, ” Omizu wo onegaishimasu” means ” Please give me a glass of water”. ” Kore onegaishimasu ” means ” please give me this.” Onegaishimasu is actually very convenient phrase.

To WAITER

Here are some phrases that normally waiter may tell you :

” Gochumon wa ijyou desuka?”

Normally after you order to waiter, a waiter may say to you this phrase which means ” Is that’s all you want to order?”

“Omatase shimashita”

When a waiter bring the food what you want, normally he/she say ” Thank you for waiting “.

” Syou syou omachi kudasai”

If you ask something to a waiter and they need to check, normally he/she may tell you this phrase ” Could you wait for a moment?”.

USEFUL PHRASES in the restaurant

” Toire wa doko desuka?” =Where is the toilet?

Toire means Toilet. This means ” Where is the toilet?”

“Ikura desuka” = how much is it?

If you need to ask the price, this is the phrase. ” How much ?”

” Gochisou sama deshita”=Thank you for your meal.

When you leave the restaurant after settling the bill, normally Japanese say this word to the restaurant staff. It means ” Thank you for great meal “.

“Kodomo-you no chair wa arimasuka?” = Do you have a child-chair?

Normally restaurant staff can help to ask ” do you need to use child-chair ?” if you bring small kids. If you need a child-chair, this is the phrase , Do you have child-chair?”.

If you want to say ” Do you have child plate? ” –> ” Kodomo you plate wa arimasuka?”

” Credit card wa tsukae masuka?” = Can I use credit card here?

If you want to ask ” can I use credit card? ” This is the phrase.

USEFUL WORDS in the restaurant

Ocha = Tea (Japanese green tea)

Omizu = Water

Toire = Toilet

Oyu = Hot water

Dore = which one

~ga arimasuka? = Do you have ~ ?

Kodomo = Child/Children

Isu = Chair

Otsuri= Change

Resiito = Receipt

Reji = Casher

Ohashi = Chopstick
